Your State RulesFAQs

1. If I register to vote in US elections, will that make the IRS come calling?

We aren’t able to provide tax advice, but registering to vote does not change your tax status.

Every US citizen, regardless of where they live, has to file federal income tax forms with the IRS. Registering to vote and voting in US elections doesn’t affect that requirement.

If you're not up to date with your US tax filings or have questions about your federal tax reporting obligations, you may wish to consult a tax professional. We can’t recommend specific tax professionals, however, we can recommend the Tax Return Preparer Directory published by American Citizens Abroad, which includes consultants based around the world, to look for a professional consultant for tax or financial account reporting advice.
